I'm not surprised (and kinda glad) you mentioned Sphinn in there, Jill. You're right -- there are about 4-5 blogs that show up somewhat regularly in "What's New", and all they offer is repeats of what was already posted on SEL, SEW, SE Roundtable, SEJ, etc., with nothing new added to the discussion. They rarely get lots of votes, unless friends are helping out.
I keep finding spam blogs that somehow piece together content by going out and grabbing words from original blog posts and piecing together a "new" post. One of mine had my title but the content was a mix of unrelated words plus one or two sentences from my post. And of course, ads everywhere.
Wish there was a way to send an "Amber Alert" (like in the USA when a child goes missing) that sends out an automatic feed to every blogger who subscribes, every news outlet and every search engine that we can ping the moment we find our stuff ripped off.
With so many scraper sites out there it's going to virtually impossible to stamp out the most obvious copies. Lets hope that the search engines do finally catch on and dump these sites ASAP as they are rarely anything more than spam anyhow.
With my Google Alerts I constantly get a flood of emails letting me know that my articles have been published on other sites - usually entirely as originally posted, links included. Wonder how much good you can gain from the bad? I wouldn't bet it would be much though.
I recently had some content ripped off by someone who posts in here. It took several requests for the material to be removed from their website, but the cheeky bugger didn't remove it from the RSS feeds so it still got copied out to yet other places. You know who you are!! You've lost a lot of respect pal.
I see my thoughts plagerized all the time. I don't get upset though. I just remember that my blog is not my focus, and it's not even close to the stature of other SEOs' blogs. Besides, I get a chuckle thinking about someone taking my thoughts and feelings. I mean, if they could only see what those thoughts and feelings have done to my career....lol....
...
..aw crap.
this is why i just do seo. i don't really blog about anything that seo related except the ocassional rant or to just joke around. someone else will blog about it, i can almost bet on it.
sidenote: hope you are having fun on the cruise jill.
I thought before Plagiarism is almost same with pirating..but this is totally a different thing..I was just amazed that even ideas and thoughts can be plagiarize...but I guess in our time wherein almost everything is accessible by Internet..nothing will be impossible.
Plagiarism aside (it's happened to me, too), I recently found "web design" site that was nothing more than dozens of pages from various sections of our sites. The owner would not answer emails; he did not answer his phone, either.
This is where the Digital Millennium Copyright Act is your friend. It allows you -- by email -- to file a DMCA complaint with the web host, who must, by law, comply by removing the copyright-infringing material from the server. There's a great writeup here which, though lengthy, gives start-to-finish detail:
http://www.pixel2life.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=20185
Many web hosts, too, give the short version of what they want, for instance, http://order.1and1.com/xml/order/SubpoenaPolicy
Bottom line: write your email correctly, and the web host takes care of it FAST (probably in hours), without the need of lawyers, lawyers fees, or even paper sent by snail mail.
The DMCA also allows for notifying domain registrars and even ICANN. Really, this is a law that protects web publishers.
I believe that "cyberspace" provides an interesting perspective by many that they are somehow sheltered by some star trek type cloaking device. The reality that there are many writers, bloggers, specialists, SEO supposed gurus and may others posting from basement aparments, cyber cafes, rented offices or just swiping bandwidth going down the road. It is not uncommon then to see many without any original thoughts or ideas gleening from those that actually do.
Your comments reinforce the reality that there is an increasing need for some level of "governing body" in our industry to provide some level of oversight to an industry that will only get worse with the number of participants increasing everyday.
Thanks for addressing the issue.
One thing I hate is that many "article writers" scrape ezinearticles and expect $10 for each. These copycats hate copyscape. I typically get a little man with a thick accent yelling "America is fat, lazy and stupid!" Good luck trying to get your money back.
