The conclusion: all other things being equal (e.g., marketing budget, content quality, design, affiliation with larger websites and so on), a website with a good domain name will always outperform a competitor with a bad or average domain name.

I was impressed that rather than a theoretical argument, this was backed by some research. Most interesting was that 2 word 7 character names were the mean of both graphs...

the mode :)

the mean was 7.15 characters on the first one, and 8,47 characters on the second case.

I have o say domain names should be easy to remember and catchy that way people can recall your site easily.

From a corporate branding point of view "keywords in domains" are almost impossible to compete with if they are also well optimised and have equal links. When, for example, you look for almost any sector on Google, the keyworded domains pop up at or near to top. My personal view is that all three engines should give less weight to keyworded domain names. The corporates are not getting a look in.

Spend the time to get the name right. The keywords DO COUNT if that's your branding goal.

Then buy a bunch more URLS's that relate to it and eventually surround your focus URL with the secondary you purchased.  Your new enterprise now has a better chance as its a slightly larger fish.

The secondary URLS also allow you to be a bit more experimental. When the first stats start rolling in, tweak the secondary aggressively. You can now afford to be conservative with the primary.
